Background and Company History of Humana, Inc.

Humana, Inc. initially began as a nursing home, started in the early 1960’s by David A. Jones under the name Extendicare. Extendicare experienced great initial success and opened hundreds of locations throughout North America, morphing into the nation’s largest chain of nursing homes.

In the early 1970’s Extendicare also began purchasing hospitals and by 1980 had also become the nation’s largest owner of hospitals, at which time the company officially changed their name to Humana, Inc.

Humana distinguished themselves from their competition at an early stage by implementing strict management policies and placing a heavy focus on rapid construction and expansion. Some of Humana’s many stringent management policies included, the refusal to manage hospitals they did not directly have ownership of, the requirement of all patients to agree to a payment plan before they were discharged, and the quick turnover of hospitals that were not profitable.

As Humana became increasingly conscious of hospital occupancy they moved into the healthcare business to establish a referral system that would divert up to 70 percent of all individuals on their health care plans to Humana owned medical facilities. Humana planned to attract customers by offering extremely low-cost plan premiums and deductibles, and while this plan seemed like a good idea at the time after barely two years of operation in the healthcare industry Humana realized their business plan had underestimated actual costs by almost 25 percent; and to make matters worse the assumption that nearly 70 percent of individuals on their healthcare plan would be referred to their hospitals was found to be a gross overestimation by almost 30 percent.

In an effort to recover the billions of dollars in lost profit Humana began placing tighter restrictions around in-network referrals and patient repayment plans and in 1989 Humana, Inc. saw it’s first profitable year, bringing in almost $4 million in revenue. As Humana saw this revenue increase over the next several years the company made the decision to solely focus on healthcare and sold off 76 of their Humana owned hospitals.

HumanaOne Dental

Humana launched the HumanaOne business division as a way to offer financially affordable health care plans to individuals. HumanaOne Dental strives to meet individual consumers’ needs and offers many different options for deductibles and dental procedures. The dental healthcare plan allows individuals to take care of their oral health without subscribing to additional Humana healthcare plans. Humana One Dental is recognized in the dental industry for offering zero dollar co-pays on beneficial preventative and diagnostic oral health exams.

  • 2000 Memorial Sisters of Charity of Texas is acquired by Humana.
  • 2003 Humana acquires Oschner Health Plan of Louisiana.
  • 2005 Humana partners with the Virigin Corporation to reward employees for healthy practices, by offering them discounts on healthcare and also acquires Corphealth Behavioral Healthcare of Texas and CarePlus Health of Florida.
  • 2006 Humana acquires CHA Health of Kentucky.
  • 2007 Humana buys Compbenefits of Georgia and KMG of Minnesota.
  • 2008 Humana acquires OSF Healthplans of Illinois, Metcare of Florida and Cariten of Tennessee. Fortune Magazine names Humana among the Top 5 Most Admired Healthcare Companies in the United States.
